34. Upriver to Mung Noi

So the next day I carried on upriver from Nong Khiaw to Mung Noi about an hour boat ride.

We were packed into the boat

And went past beautiful scenery

With some white water. The river is very shallow at the moment...

Til we arrived at Mung Noi..

When I landed in Mung Noi I headed for the village of Huay Bo, inland, and stayed one night there. On my return the next day I found a lovely room by the boat landing, and spent the afternoon chilling in my hammock...!

A lot of voices shouting interrupted my peace.... It was the funeral of a former head man of the village.

Lots of locals carried the coffin down to the water, and with jostling and shouting, loaded it onto waiting boats, and then motored off downstream followed by lots of locals in lots of boats. They were gone several hours, and the lady of the guest house where I was staying said the body and coffin would be burned and the ashes scattered in the river. When everyone returned they had a big meal and a party near the local Wat. And I went back to my hammock and my book.... And the sunset from my balcony...

The next morning brought another day and a chilly misty start...

I met the Canadian guy at the boat landing. He was going on upriver and then crossing into Vietnam by way of Dien Bien Phu, whereas I was heading back to Luang Prabang then further south. I caught the boat back to Nong Khiaw and the bus to Luang Prabang met the boat. By 4pm I was back in LP again.
